What this is
Most mixing advice assumes you already own Slate, UAD, or Acustica. This one assumes you own Ableton Live.
Over eight episodes I mix a track from the ground up using nothing but stock devices — EQ Eight, Compressor, Glue, Saturator, Utility, the reverbs and delays that came in the box. Every move is explained while I make it: what I’m hearing, why I’m reaching for that device, and what I’d do differently if the track were going to vinyl instead of streaming.
These are the foundations. Get them right and everything else you learn sits on solid ground.
What you’ll be able to do
Set levels so every device in your chain is working in the range it was designed for
Build a low end where the kick and bass occupy their own space instead of fighting
Decide when a sound needs EQ, when it needs compression, and when it needs neither
